Årdal Maskinering cuts deviation costs from 4% to 1% with RamBase
Årdal Maskinering started in 1997 as a one-man business in Nærbø, Norway. Today, the company turns and mills precision metal parts, mainly for the oil and gas industry. In that industry, quality, delivery precision and documentation are non-negotiable. For around 13 years, RamBase has been the system that holds it all together.
Challenge
Rapid growth, lean administration
Årdal Maskinering began with one machine and one customer. From there, the company grew from a single employee and less than NOK 1 million in turnover to around 60 employees and NOK 130 million at its peak. The business had to adapt to keep up.
As a pure production company, Årdal has a clear principle: keep administration to a minimum, so the effort goes into machining. At the same time, customers in oil and gas expect top-tier quality, precise deliveries and a complete documentation package with every order. Årdal needed one system that could plan production efficiently, run the business and document every step, without becoming extra work.
The outcome
Deviation costs down from 4% to 1% of turnover
When Frode Hegle, QHSSER Group Manager, joined Årdal Maskinering around 13 years ago, deviation costs were at about 4% of turnover. Today they are down to around 1%. Hegle credits "a very good management tool". Together with delivery precision, it's one of the most important things Årdal is measured on. Årdal also uses the quality functionality in RamBase to control customer specifications, report sustainability data and deliver the complete documentation package most customers require.

That's how Jørn Arvid Sæther, previous Head of Production, describes RamBase. Finance, production and warehouse run in one package, and everything happens in real time. All follow-up happens in RamBase, and being able to keep track from a mobile, wherever you are, matters to management. On the shop floor, nobody wants to go back to the way things were.
A system they never have to worry about
"There's so little downtime that we haven't even bothered to calculate it," says Hegle. If something does come up, the support team is there right away. Just as important to him is RamBase's commitment to continuous improvement, something he is personally passionate about: "That's where they're number one."
