At Eramet, safety and improvement begin by listening to the people in the field

How do you ensure safe, standardized, and continuously improving operations across industrial sites in five continents? For Eramet, part of the answer lies in how they use RamBase Quality Management System (QMS). By embedding training videos in procedures, enabling real-time improvement suggestions from the field, and supporting a unified approach to quality, RamBase QMS contributes to a more aligned and efficient way of working across the group.

From Gabon to Norway, consistent operations, globally

Eramet is a global mining and metallurgical group with operations spanning five continents. From nickel extraction in Indonesia and New Caledonia to manganese in Gabon, mineral sands in Senegal, and lithium in Argentina. The company also operates industrial transport and production plants in Norway, France, and the United States.

In Norway, Eramet has a long-standing focus on responsible operations. Since 2015, RamBase has supported Eramet Norway in their efforts to minimize environmental impact and maintain up-to-date environmental risk assessments at their facilities in Sauda, Porsgrunn, and Kvinesdal. This work is a central part of Eramet’s commitment to sustainable operations and compliance with environmental regulations.

With such a broad and complex operational footprint, ensuring consistency, safety, and efficiency across all sites is essential. That’s where the RamBase Quality Management System comes in.

Built on collaboration and transparency

One of the driving forces behind the rollout is Edouard Salathé, Corporate Social Responsibility, Risk and Compliance IS Product Line Manager at Eramet. In an interview featured in the video above, Salathé shares how trust and collaboration have shaped the implementation process:

“Building trust starts with getting to know each other through real projects and having a transparent dialogue about user experience,” says Edouard Salathé, Corporate Social Responsibility, Risk and Compliance IS Product Line Manager at Eramet. This philosophy has been central to the implementation of RamBase QMS.

Engaging and understandable documentation

One of the key features Eramet values in RamBase QMS is the ability to embed instructional videos directly into operational procedures. This makes documentation more engaging and easier to understand and follow, especially for operators in the field.  This functionality is part of the visual documentation module, which is specifically designed to simplify complex procedures and support safe, consistent execution across sites.

“What we like about the RamBase QMS solution is the fact that we can embed videos into the operating procedures. Also the fact that the improvement process is integrated into the solution,” says Salathé.

In addition, the integrated improvement process enables frontline employees to suggest changes directly in the system. These suggestions are automatically routed to the relevant author of that procedure, creating a seamless feedback workflow that supports continuous improvement.

“We like that operators can suggest improvements directly in the system. It creates a natural feedback loop that supports ongoing optimization.”

Building a unified foundation

The current focus of the RamBase QMS rollout is to create a strong, unified structure across all of Eramet’s global operations. This includes implementing standardized procedure templates, establishing clear responsibilities, and aligning management practices across sites and regions.

By supporting the Eramet Production System (EPS), the QMS reinforces structured workflows and promotes safe, consistent execution. This foundation makes it easier to scale best practices across sites and ensures that everyone is working towards the same operational goals.

“The solution enables us to make sure our staff perform their tasks in a secure and safe environment,” Salathé concludes.

A modern approach to quality management

Eramet’s approach shows how quality management is evolving, from rigid documentation to an interactive, improvement-driven system that empowers people across the organization.

With a balance of structure and flexibility, and by actively involving frontline teams, RamBase QMS supports Eramet in building safer and more consistent operations worldwide.

A broader transformation journey

The implementation of RamBase QMS is just one part of Eramet’s wider journey toward modernization and operational resilience. With a century of industrial experience behind them, Eramet Norway continues to embrace change. Not only through quality systems, but also by rethinking how they adapt to evolving demands from customers, regulators, and society at large.
